I was raised as a Christian, and baptized when I was all of eight years old. It's been downhill since then. Way back then, when this issue was important to me, I studied & attended services for all of the major religions. I eventually became a Catholic (primarily because I was marrying a Catholic Girl), but partly because I thought it as a good religion, and
I was acquainted with many good catholic people. I tried really hard, but I just couldn't get my head to accept what they were saying. After my divorce, I became an agnostic, and when I became sober, I graduated to atheism (see How I became an Atheist), where I remain to this day.
I believe that organized religion is generally not harmful, but the potential for great harm is there any time an organized group feels that it is their God-given duty to impose their wills and views on other people (i.e., Fred Phelps). I believe that anyone can believe anything they want to to get by in this world; it's a personal choice. Some things that people believe in are really stupid, some just kinda stupid. I don't necessarily believe that my way is better than anyone else's, but it's mine.
Ah, a little change in the religious philosophy now. At this time, after much thought and consideration, I Do believe that my way is better. I have come from believing that "I don't believe in god" to "there is no god." Therefore, anyone who does believe in god is wrong. I also question their intelligence.
