What can Topeka do?
|
The Phelps gang has ruled Topeka Street corners for several years now, evidently with the consent of the mayor and the police department. Their hate message is plain and their language is crude. They are protected to a certain extent by the constitution, but mostly by gutless officials. The recently "discovered" hands-off policy lays the blame in the mayors' lap; I believe that it is more in the hands of the people of Topeka who elected him.
There is no middle-of-the-road with the Phelps Gang. You are either for them or against them; You cannot believe just part of what they have to say; you must hate them or love them. And the people of Topeka mostly all hate them, and what they stand for. The unbridaled bigotry and self-righteousness offends most people who see them with their signs. Their message is hate, and their God (according to Fred) hates queers and people who hate Fred. Pretty simple. Is there a way to rid Topeka of this blight without taking away our constitutional and first amendment rights? Would merely enforcing the laws as they are written maybe do some good? Is there somewhere a leader in Topeka who is willing to take on the Phelps Gang? No-one has shown up yet.... |
