Daily Nilknarf Haiku

mechanisms will,
and frequently do, fracture
our living fabric.

The day started off more or less OK... I snoozebarred for forty-five minutes before I got up, but I would make it to work on time easily.

Heh... so I thought.

However, when I was at about 10th and Gage, the battery light went on.

Well, damn! I decided to take the truck to the place across from the hospital on 6th street.

When I turned the corner on 6th, I noticed that my lights were getting dim... dimmer and dimmer.

I turned off the radio and the defroster-blower and kept on going.

I kept having more lights come on on the dash... and then they all went blank.

And I went until I got to McVicker street, when I hit a red light.

And that was as far as it went.

So I turned the blinkers on, I'm not really sure why they still worked, but they did.

Then I called AAA. The lady asked me if I was blocking traffic and I told her yes and she said that she'd put me on the top of the list. That was at 06:42; I didn't get a call back from them until 07:00, and they said that they'd be there in less than a half-hour.

And they were there at 07:17.

And I was at work at 07:30.

Being stuck in a truck in the middle of a fairly busy road is not fun... and I found out that one of my co-workers went right by me, not recognizing my truck.

All the while that I was sitting there I was watching in my rear-view mirror in order to be able to brace myself if some jackass didn't see me....

Additionally, it started to rain... hard... at 07:00. I had thought about going over to the Hardy's on the corner to get some coffee, and the rain decided me against that.

So I got to work, not too soaked, and the day was OK. I did get an upsetting call from the folks with the truck, though... $480 for the alternator, which includes labor. Damn!

The last alternator I bought was for the Toyota truck, and it was maybe 40 bucks... and I put it in myself, of course.

They also had to replace the belt and the adjuster arm too....

I've never had an alternator go out on a newer vehicle before, it was interesting, albeit costly.

I've got pleurisy yet again... I haven't had it for five, six years. It was hurting in my upper back right next to the spice yesterday, and now it's hurting in my right chest, especially when I take a deep breath.

However, given the recent medical history of loved ones, if it's still there on Monday I will get a chest x-ray....

Thunderstorms! Nice big ones, with hail and wind!

And NONE of them in Topeka, dammit. Just rain.

Storms to the west, east and south... and several of the areas on the radar that gave us a little bit of rain are turning red north of here.

We just can't get lucky, storm-wise.

And this day has been really tiring.

I did get to do a CT scan on a good friend, and that was a good-news thing... made me happy, and her too.

I think that it's bedtime.
