A real bitch of a day. We were 1.5 FTEs short today, and booked solid all day, but that didn't stop the add-ons from getting in. I was running the scan room today, so I was only peripherally involved in the hundreds of phone calls.... Just right in the middle of seemingly hundreds of patients. And my legs are like boils.... I did get a chance to visit briefly with one of JD's old bandmates, a guy named Chad. His stepmother works at the hospital, and she's really proud of him... he showed me a picture of his cute newish (9 months, maybe) baby boy. He's living in Seattle now and he does glass-work of the artistic variety for a living while going for his MFA degree. Unfortunately, a few minutes was all that I was able to spend with him as the patients were piling up. The people who run our department seem to be very reluctant to supply personnel when we're short, even though the patients are complaining... and, of course, we get the blame for that. And they never spend any time watching what's going on, which leaves us with the idea that they don't care... which is bad for morale, naturally. So... what keeps us going, and what they count on to keep us going... is the fact that these patients need us. And it has nothing to do with the pay scale, although we're a long ways from being overpaid, of course. It's that there is more work than people to do the work, and people are being inconvenienced and possible even harmed because of it. And that's all that I'll say about that. I'm sure that every workplace has the same problem, always have and always will. And it makes me more tired just thinking about it. Additionally... the sale of the old house fell through. The lady just decided that she didn't want it. That was some frosting on this day. And I'm on call....
we carry on regardless
It's what we must do.
