Daily Nilknarf Haiku

Civilized veneer;
Hot water, flush toilets, air
conditioning... yeah!

Heh, the closing line last night was that I was gonna catch up on sleep. I really wasn't trying to fool my dear readers, but myself.

And it didn't work.

It was a grind getting to sleep, and a grind, as usual, getting up.

But I thought that a nice hot shower would wake me up.

Well, it didn't. It might have, had there been hot water....

When they moved the meter the other day, Karen was here when they started, but not when they left. So they left the meter plugged and left a number to call.

I didn't know this, of course, until I turned on the faucet. And got cold water.

So I went to work unwashed... which was not too bad, I had a shower yesterday morning, and probably used up all of the available hot water then.

And yesterday evening, Mom and Karen were talking about the dryer not working, but that didn't clue me in....

I was the scan room guy today, and it was fun, as usual. Killed my legs, as usual. Not a bad day at work, though, all in all.

So I came home after work and got some matches and a wrench to turn on the gas. First, I turned everything off... then I went out to the meter and turned it on.

Then I went downstairs to light the hot-water heater.

And tried and tried and tried but to no avail.

So I figgered that there was just a lot of air in the line, I just needed to hold the button down for a while. So I did.

Nothing. And, come to think of it, I couldn't even hear it hissing... there was no gas there.

At that point I realized that I'd been had, the meter wasn't as simple as I had thought.

So I called the gas company, and after a short time on hold, I got to speak to a real person. She said that there would be someone out within two hours.

In the meantime, Patrick had come over to take a shower. I couldn't talk him into taking a cold one, though, heh. He's just a little bit smarter than that, I guess.

About that time, it started pouring cats and dogs, like it had been threatening to do all day.

And the gas guy came. He went out and messed with the meter in the downpour, then came in and lit the hot-water tank. He told me that yeah, it was plugged on purpose, to keep people from blowing up their houses and then blaming the gas company.

And there should be some hot water by now....

And we've probably gotten a coupla inches of rain so far, and it's still coming down.

And the basement is gettin water... the jackasses who were supposed to build the shop covered up the end of the french drain that JD and Tyler dug for me a coupla-three years ago. I need to go dig it up so that it actually drains the way it's supposed to.

And tonight? TOnight I'm gonna catch up on my sleep, heh.
