Daily Nilknarf Haiku

Marshmallow peanuts:
at first, ambrosia of gods;
later, sickening sweet.

Well, today wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Started off with a light schedule, and we had few add-ons and few emergencies. We were supposed to get some help from diagnostic radiology, but they had three of their eight techs call in sick, so that was out. But we got by OK.

This afternoon there was a drainage procedure, and since I was the Z guy, I got to do it. Earlier the other tech that was there and I flipped a coin to see who did what, and I ran the scan room in the morning, but when the 13:00 tech came on, I was free to do the drainage procedure. That's three days that I was in the scan room this week, which is great with me, it's physically demanding but much more satisfying than running the console or putting IVs in people, although the latter is kinda fun too, since it's patient contact.

I do have to make sure that my feelings are not known to the other techs, who all think that being in the scan room is the worst assignment.

Anyway, back on track now:

The drainage procedure went well, the patient had recently had a gastric bypass, and she definitely tested the limits of my machinery, but she was a very pleasant patient. She had her sister with her, an RN from a different hospital, and she was really nice too. We let the sister stay in the room for the procedure, which is definitely not standard procedure, but it worked out well, she stayed out of the way nicely. She was watching over my shoulder as I did the scans and asking very good questions.

And the procedure was successful, the patient will feel better pretty quickly, and, with a little luck, will avoid some pretty extensive and risky surgery. I always feel good doing these procedures, they almost always have very positive outcomes.

Karen and I are going out tonight, Jody is playing at Stingers, and tomorrow night we're going out, another friend of mine, Tom Artzer, is playing at the Den. Tom has just recently become a solo act, and I'm kinda disappointed, 'cause the girl that he played with was supposed to be pretty good.

And this day has been pretty long, and I should be really tired, but for some reason or another, I'm not, and I think that I'll enjoy the evening.

And I'm gonna enjoy sleeping in tomorrow too.

In fact, I'm gonna enjoy this whole weekend, yes I am!

I just got a call from my buddy Jess in Enid, his wife Brenda came through her mastectomy well, and the surgeon was 99.9% sure that they'd got all of the cancer, and she will probably go home on Sunday. I'm really happy to hear that, we had been worried about her.

Thanx for being here!
