Notes

The rain is finally tapering off... it'll be completely gone by later tonight. Which reminds me, I was gonna find a site that gives the official amount here in Topeka... OK, here it is: 4.77 inches at Forbes Field, courtesy of the NOAA (http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/KFOE.html). My estimate of six inches still stands, but that's for the last 36 hours, while the Forbes measurement is for 24 hours.

JD got involved in the #1 story on CNN News last night... no, he didn't get to be on TV, but it wasn't a wreck that closed the road, but a wash-out... one that killed five people, four kids and their mother. The dad was OK... well, physically. I can't imagine losing your kids and wife like that, how horrible.

We figgered out that JD was about a half-mile from the washout when it happened... there was a cop on the scene that started stopping vehicles immediately. It was said that there was a six-foot-high wall of water. The van that had the kids in it was washed a mile-and-a-half from the highway.

There are quite a few stock ponds in the area that you can see from the road, and most likely many more that you can't see... and the area had about a foot of rain in the preceding 12 hours, so it could have been a cascading effect on the pond dams.

Anyway, JD was damned lucky, and I'm damned happy about that.

And I feel so sorry for those that died... they still haven't found all of the bodies, I guess there were a few more cars that got washed away. What a surprise... a wall of water on the turnpike, coming out of nowhere, sweeping you off and drowning you.

JD finally got in at about 00:30 or 01:00, I'd kinda lost track of the time. We had a short visit, then he started calling all of the people that he was supposed to call when he got here safely... and I went to bed.

I got up about 10:30 this AM, and generally did nothing until about 12:30 when I woke JD up... then we all sat around doing nothing for a while. Hangin' out.

Brian is in town for the weekend, and he's staying with Matt. Karen went over to Kims', so it's just JD and I now... and he'll be going off to Lawrence soon, and I'll be going on call.

21:32...
Just got home from the first stint, did four patients, and I was on my way out the door when I got paged for the last two... I'd clocked out when the phone rang for the last one.

Luckily, there's a tech on until 01:00 who can do some of the simpler procedures, but the one coming on at 01:00 can't, so I'll most likely spend from 01:00 on there....

Thanx for being here!
