Weirdness... just absolute weirdness.
I didn't get called in today until 12:05. And when I got there, I found that there hadn't been a patient done since 02:00. However, I did get a call from the guy that was on last night, he called about 08:30. He'd been called in because the machine wasn't working. So I got my patient on the table, a pleasant lady in her 60s who was having non-acute abdominal pain, lookin' for a possible renal stone. And sure enough, the machine wasn't working again. After several failed re-boots, I took the patient over to the "Z" and did her exam. As I mentioned, she was in her 60s, and she told me that she'd never been inside a hospital before. Wasn't born in one, didn't have her kids in one, never was sick. So, I got her exam done, and by that time our in-house repair guy was there with a quick diagnosis: one of the redundant array of SCSI drives was bad. Since they're redundant, to my way of thinking that shouldn't affect the machine, it should automagically shift to the good pair, right? Wrong. You've gotta go in and physically change jumpers. Kinda spoils the whole idea of redundancy , from a user's viewpoint. What I want in redundancy is uninterrupted service. Having to call in an engineer doesn't fit that definition.. So anyhoo, I come home and wait for the next call. It doesn't come until about 17:00. The main machine is now working flawlessly. Another quick patient, walkie-talkie type. I notice that someone has listed the reason as "right facial droop"; this is wrong, it's the left side. I check the chart, half of the notations mention right, the other left. I make sure that corrections are made, then I head out the door. Then I remember that I've left the "Z" on, so I got get the key and walk back over and shut it down. I drove by Kim's and stopped on the way home, the party is over there tonight as usual. I'll go over a little later after the good food is cooked, all they had was hot dogs, I'll wait for the chicken breasts that Karen marinated. And it is hot out. 105°F heat index. I've really got mixed feelings about the day... it's nice not being deluged with patients, but one the other hand, I was planning on making some money today. That ain't happenin with two patients. 00:24... like, Saturday. Just got home; I had gotten called in earlier for a single short exam, then came back home I ventured over to Kim's and stayed there until about 21:00 when I got a call from the hospital, went in and did three patients. And now I'm really draggin'. I did get some good food, though... Karen's chicken and some brats that were excellent. I also had a few deviled eggs and a small helping of baked beans. Unfortunately, they were just starting to do the night fireworks when I got called in, dammit... I wanted to get some pictures. The ER parking lot was almost deserted when I got there, and almost full when I left. That bodes ill for the rest of the night, I'm afraid, but probably not for me. Lotsa burns and minor fractures... I noticed that on my way through the waiting area. There were some rumors of a multiple shooting earlier, but nobody showed up at our place or next door, so it was only that, a rumor. That's a good thing, heh. Anyways... tune in on Sunday evening, same old URL.
