Natterings, Notions
and
Notes

Monday, January 27, 2003 19:18

I had a horrible time getting to sleep last night, finally dropping off between 02:00 and 02:30. And then pound, pound, pound on the snooze-bar this morning.

And work today was the worst day that we've had in a while, but I did have some comic relief. I went out to the waiting area to get a patient, a middle-aged lady, and she asked me, "Do I need to go to the bathroom?" and I answered, "I don't know, I can't really tell from here..." I've been holding on to that line for quite a while now, and the timing was just perfect.

In case it ain't clear from the context, people are wondering how long they're going to be on the table, they're not really asking me to judge how full their bladders are, kinda like "Guess how much money I have in my pocket and you can have it!"

And yes, the patient thought that it was hilarious.

I wound up staying over 90 minutes or so, and my back is killing me again... Karen is gonna check tomorrow and see if a chiropractor will see me... it's a desperation move, yeah. But this has been going on a long time.

Tomorrow... the state of the union. I don't know if I'll be able to watch it or not, I couldn't watch but about two minutes of that simpering SOB last year, and I don't think that either one of us has changed any in the intervening period.

So, to war, or not to war? War is a failure, in most cases. Violence in general is a failure, a failure of society, a failure of humanity, a failure in every human being who perpetrates it, a failure in every human being who condones it, a failure in every human being who ignores it. An especially poignant failure for those who look the other way, thinking that it'll never happen to them.

So, has my America become the giant imperialistic war-monger that the soviets were so afraid of, back in the day? I think that those people, those war-mongers, were always there, but they were beaten down by men of character. Where O where are those men of character when we truly truly need them? There are none to be found in the current administration, I fear. Powell comes the closest, and he bends and bends, getting closer and closer to removing himself from my definition of men with character....
