Hard time getting awake this morning, and I wore shoes to work for the first time since last March. Darnit anyway, I really would rather just have fall until spring, if that's OK... who do I need to speak to for that? No, Mom, don't say it.... Weird day at work, y'know, we're never just... not busy. Except for today, and we just plain weren't busy at all. Many of our patients cancelled, mostly for legitimate reasons, and the ED didn't kick in at all, only did a coupla-three patients from there. Yeah, it was really nice. Additionally, I was driving the console today, so besides not being too busy, I got to sit down even when I did have to work. So, on to the news, specifically the sniper. Last night I was sitting with Karen, and I told her that I thought that it was a cop or an ex-cop... and about fifteen minutes later one of the ubiquitous "experts" said the same thing and applied the same reasoning. Not that that really means anything at all, either my opinion or his, whoever he was. It is just really amazing that this guy is holding the nation hostage. And I'm really surprised that there aren't copycats popping up all over the place. Another theory is that it's a terrorist organization, and that they had set people up all over the country but discovered that they didn't really need any more than the one to accomplish their purpose, so the rest are in reserve. None of us are safe, ever... that's always been true, but we've been going along fat and dumb and happy until the WTC deal... now we have to think about it, and it's not pretty. Yeah, they're religious nuts, but the world is full of religious nuts, and not too many really want to kill us. Islam is different, though... there are way too many who take it very seriously, much more seriously than the average American church-goer. How many average American Church-goers are willing to sacrifice their lives for an ideal? The great majority would take a pass on that... mostly because they don't really have the courage of their convictions. The "Good" ones know that they will go to heaven, and it's a better place. The rest of them aren't willing to die to find out... at least not right now. The enemy doesn't have that problem... mostly because they have absolutely nothing right now in this world, so in effect, even death is an improvement... and a death with a heaven and 78 virgins is a vast improvement. Eh, I got off the subject, which was the sniper. I hope that they catch him soon. I don't really care what they do with him once he's caught, as long as they stop him from killing more. And I don't really know how I would feel if I lived in that area. I would like to think that I wouldn't change my life... but that would be stupid. But cowering in our houses is stupid, too. Either way we lose, dammit.
There are a lot of people out there that hate us, hate us enough to die if they can kill a few of us. They hate us because we're us, and because they are them, and not us. No, it doesn't make sense, but dammit, it's true.
