Natterings, Notions
and
Notes

Got up fairly early today, and Karen and I got some major cleaning/re-arranging done. Cool all day, and it started raining/thundering early in the afternoon and hasn't really quit yet...

Galen came over about noon, and we had a good time catching up, and we did throw a few darts, too. Unfortunately, he's got a recent shoulder injury that kept us from going too long at it... back in the old days, we'd spend hours throwing darts and drinking beer.

Karen was gone most of the afternoon, out gadding about with Kim and Patrick, and she brought Patrick with her when she came home. He'll be staying the night, I guess.

And I'm sitting here listening to Chet Atkins and figgering out the Linux system that I finally got installed on a 400MZ machine. I'm using the Gnome graphical interface, so it's quite a bit like Windoze, but you can change a lot more things on the interface... pretty cool stuff. Useful? I donno, but it's cute.

The rainy weather has really made my right knee hurt, the one that I hurt on Thanxgiving a few years ago. It usually doesn't bother me unless I try to sit cross-legged on the floor, but today it's throbbing with almost any motion. Kinda weird, it doesn't do any good to limp on it, it hurts just as much with a regular gait as it does when I try to favor it. Or vice versa, I guess.

I got a call from the hospital, the tech on call had some questions about computers... the hospital lost power when the first of the storms went through today, and it took out a couple of the PCs that are used for viewing CT images.

Strangely, there are UPSes on the print servers, but none on the expensive computers themselves... guess that the MIS people never expected a surge that would blow up our system computers. The mainframes are on a huge UPS, of course. But the $5,000 machines that we use to look at our pictures are not. Odd. O'well, I'll bet when they replace the computers they'll have some hefty UPSes on 'em.

Ah... UPS stands for Uninterruptable Power Supply, or something like that. Very good things to have, and they're cheap now, you can get one for around $50. Well worth it, saves you the price of a PC occasionally. I got by fine for years without one, of course, fool's luck.

O'yeah, I keep forgetting to mention that I was accepted into the Word to the wise burb... I'm eclectic! Go visit the other wise people in the 'burb!

Thanx for being here!
