Natterings, Notions
and
Notes

Yet again, another lousy night's sleep, dammit.

Yes, I'm re-using yesterday's opening sentence. Tomorrow, I'm gonna sleep until I feel like getting up, I hope.

Today was a really crummy day at work, too. I was doing the patient care today, and when I injected my first patient of the day, there was hardly any contrast on the images.

So I went out and found that there was contrast that had leaked out of his IV. It looked just fine for the first 15 or 20 ML that I watched go in, but after I'd gone into the control room, the teflon sheath had separated from the hub, allowing contrast and blood to leak. This is a very infrequent happenstance, luckily.

Unfortunately, the teflon sheath had not come out of the vein, but instead it was forced under the skin into the vein. As soon as I'd discovered what the problem was, I immediately put my thumb on the vein and kept it there for the next 20 minutes or so while we got set up for a doc to come in and take it out.

Alas, either I wasn't fast enough or it had already travelled up the vein before I compressed it... it was nowhere to be found.

There will most likely be no harm come to the patient... the sheath would travel up the arm and dump into the superior vena cava, hit the right ventricle and into the pulmonary artery and wedge into one of the lesser vessels there. Most likely, it would only minimally reduce the blood flow at that point.

From that point on, everything had to get better, right? Right. And it did, but only very slowly and in very small increments and with maximal backsliding.

I was wearing another pair of new shoes, and I had to go back with the tennies mid-afternoon. And my dogs are barkin', let me tell ya. So are my legs, for that matter.

But I did get off on time, and that was a good thing.

When I got home, Andy was here, and shortly after I got here along comes Patrick and Lacee, and in another two minutes Karen and Brian get here. Thankfully, everyone left shortly thereafter, before things got too frantic around here...

For some reason or another I turned on the TV tonight and was flipping through the channels and I ran across a station with the Doors playing. I kinda did a double take... Jim Morrison wasn't there, and all of the guys in the band looked really old. Well, they are doing all of their songs with guests singing for Morrison. Pretty strange, some of them are really good and some of them pretty much suck. But I'm enjoying them anyway.

So, I've got a lot of stuff to get done tomorrow, but I'm not gonna worry a whole lot about it tonight. I don't really have a firm departure time for Sunday, and I could leave as late as noon.

I have to be careful to not leave everything until the last minute, though, I've done that before, and I don't really like it.

Thanx for being here!
