Natterings, Notions
and
Notes

It was one of those long, hard nights. But first...

Weather-wise, it was one of the nicest halloweens that we've had for quite a while. Unfortunately, I didn't really get to enjoy the weather any... I got up late again, and I was gone before any trick-or-treaters got here... I did almost run over a couple on the way to work, though.

Anyway, busy all night. Sick people, older people who had fallen, just routine stuff, but a whole bunch of it. And a code blue which we lost (well, *we* didn't really, she was dead when she [figuratively] hit the ground and resuscitative efforts were fruitless)... that was right at 05:00, and I still had several other ED patients to do hips and CT scans on.

So, I started doing my 05:00 portables in the ICU at 06:45... I didn't get out of there until about 08:30.

When I came in last night there was a doc looking for some films that had been taken earlier on a patient, but they were nowhere to be found, so I started looking on the Synapse system (our PACS system...stores the images) and they weren't there, either. However, they were on the sub-system where they had been originally processed.

I snooped around a little more and found that none of the images had made it from the sub-systems to the Synapse since... get this... 09:38. Yesterday morning. And nobody had noticed.

So I called the radiology systems manager and she tried to fix it from home but couldn't, and the software vendor doesn't have 24-hour coverage... so it was down all night. Which was probably OK, since it had been down all day and nobody noticed...

Anyway, the systems gal came in at 07:00 and she wanted to teach me to reboot and trouble-shoot the system, so I spent a half-hour with her over in the machine room in MIS.

The problem is, of course, that if the system goes down, I certainly won't have time to screw around with it. I will be too busy running films upstairs and downstairs...

So. The work rotation is over, and I will have at least a few days to get stuff done. But I'll bet that I spend a good part of it sleeping.

The interesting thing is that I really hate sleeping... maybe that's why I have so much trouble doing it. Sleeping is a waste of time, time that I could be spending on more useful stuff... like playing Free Cell.

Weather. There is some weather in the vicinity... two nice thunderstorms since I've been home, and more to come. The first one was genuine, wind and everything... lotsa rain. I couldn't see past the back fence it was coming down so hard. And we need the rain, really badly, so that's good.

And, much as I hate to, I'm going to bed now. Karen will waken me at 17:00 and I'll keep the hours of a regular person for a while.

O'dammit! I forgot that this was a new month, I gotta do all of that new month stuff for the archives... another half-hour!

Thanx for being here!
