No sleep again... well, two hours, max. I don't know whether to blame the pills or the room... both, I think. Karen, of course, slept like a log all night.
We got on the road at 08:30 after eating at the local McDs. We were soon into St. Louis and by sheer luck, we got on the right road in Illinois. The weather turned nasty (the cold front was catching up with us) but just misty, no real rain. I think that again, we stayed ahead of the really nasty stuff.
Karen drove pretty much after we got through St. Louis. After Nashville, we started hitting some pretty heavy fog and some pretty twisty road... this was still on I-40, but there were people who were going way too fast for the road conditions... and Karen is a competitive driver, depending on her mood.
We were going to try to make Asheville, NC before stopping, but after an hour-long traffic jam in Knoxville, we decided to stay there.
The cause of the traffic jam was that a section of the road had been blocked... for no apparent reason. This just after a major intersection... six lanes of traffic coming into one lane. I couldn't believe what I saw when we went through the opening... the traffic barrels just sitting there protecting what looked like (and most likely was) normal pavement.
Shortly after being freed, we said the hell with it and got a room... this time in a more upscale motel. I talked the girl into giving us 10% off because we were from Kansas.
I guess that these people have a lot of latitude in determining what they might charge.
After checking in, we went out to find a Walgreens... Karen had forgotten her prescription meds when she packed. We found one, but the pharmacy was closed, wouldn't open until 10:00 on Sunday. After that, we decided to eat at a Waffle House. Strange place. There are a lot of them around, and we do not recommend their food.
Tomorrow: On to Asheville!
