Natterings, Notions
and
Notes

I finally got a good night's sleep... and I followed it up with a long, frustrating day. In fact, I was so frustrated that I decided not to write today. That didn't work...

Computers. Damned things, anyway...

I finally had the Linux system (Thunder, I calls it...) browsable on the WIN98 machines. So what do I do? I screw around, and screw around, trying to get the internet connection set up... and I lose everything that I gained. And, so far, I haven't been able to fix it.

And it's 03:55 in the damned morning, and I'm still up. Re-installing WIN98 on JD's machine, the last of the lot.

My problem, it turns out, wasn't really my problem at all, but I didn't know that... none of my machine were connecting to the internet, once they were disconnected.

Yup, that's right... they worked until they were re-booted.

Karen and I and JD went out for supper, before we knew that we had a problem. The New China Inn, again... and again, great food, good service, good price... anyway, JD and I were in the computer room, and he had to re-boot because of a lock-up. He noticed that he couldn't connect to the net. Well, I was right there next to him, connected on my WIN98 machine with no problem... so it had to be something related to the internal network, right?

So we checked settings, and fiddled around changing stuff, and I finally got my WIN98 so screwed up that I couldn't get out of it and had to re-boot. And then I couldn't connect.

Well, I naturally thought that I'd screwed something up on my machine, so more fiddling around with it. We checked Karen's machine, the internet port one, and it was just sailing along nice as could be. Same with Tyler's machine downstairs.

So I re-booted Tyler's machine... and no connection. It was there, then it was gone.

Anyway, to make an already long and boring story at least shorter, the ISP is down. If you're connected, you can stay connected. If you got dropped, you can pretend to re-connect (it says that it's connected...) but you can't go anywhere. Damnedest thing I've ever seen outa these old bloodshot eyes...

So, we've got all of the machines fresh copies of WIN98 SE, just waiting for the ISP to come up again. In the meantime, we put Tyler's new hard drive into the Compaq.

Damn! It's late! More tomorrow...

Thanx for being here!
