Marva's funeral was today... I didn't go, as is my usual policy. And I always feel bad about not going.
But if I changed my policy at this time in my life... I would spend more and more time going to funerals. Hell, I don't have that much time left, y'know. And if you don't like my policy, well, then don't come to my funeral, and I won't go to yours.
There are going to be some exceptions, of course. There are always exceptions.
Or maybe not.
On to more pleasant subjects: it's been raining all day (real poor weather for a funeral...) and supposed to start snowing sometime soon. It's chilly outside... which is why I'm inside.
Karen went to Lawrence yesterday and got Brian, and he stayed with Matt last night. So three kids were over here most of the day.
And Karen decided to get some work done. With the kids here. And she decided that I should help her. With the kids here.
Well, I do my best work when I can actually concentrate on it... that means no kids. Sorry, I like kids and all that, but...
Karen and I were moving a cabinet from the dining room to the utility room. All three kids had to pass us at least once while we were moving it, and all three kids (separately, of course) tried to get out of the way... by standing in the exact place that we were trying to move it to.
They are worse than cats, dammit. You're allowed to kick cats if they keep getting in your way. Well, not when Karen is watching...
And, some time or another, the kids got into the basement. Well, I've had the monitor from Tyler's computer upstairs for a few days, but I left it running for the SETI program... (by the way, I hope that you all are doing the SETI thing...) anyway, I noticed this morning that it was off-line. I re-booted it blind and still couldn't get it back. So I brought it upstairs... and the disk was hosed. Hosed too bad to boot. Had to be re-formatted. Sorry, Tyler, wherever you are...
Speaking of Tyler... when is he coming back? Nobody know, even Tyler, I think...
So anyway, after about three tries of loading WIN98 and having it fail, I decided to put the original disk back in the Compaq... its BIOS just can't figger out larger disks, I think... and load WIN2000 up.
It's pretty short of memory (36MB) and slow (200) but it seems to chug along OK with it on there. Of course, it's a pretty vanilla machine.
So far, I'm impressed. In fact, I just might go. all. the. way. with this NT type stuff. The damned thing found the network and set itself up with a little prodding, found the internet sharing connection...
On the other hand, I do have the Linux machine pinging the WIN machines OK, and I can ping it from the WIN machines, so I'm closer there. I still can't transfer files or get on the net with it, though... that's the next step.
And I have all of the Linux docs on disk... but I can't seem to absorb hard data from the screen like I can from printed material. I've gotta work on that. It's a head thing, I'm sure... I have problems with head things usually. Smoking... drinking... sleeping... eating... cussing... shit like that.
NEWS FLASH!!!
Anyway, I'm just sitting here fiddling with these infernal machines. I think that I'm making some progress with the Linux finally. I can now see files on other machines, although I can't see the Linux files from the WIN boxen yet... but I'm getting closer! In fact, I just had an insight on getting connected to the web on the Linux box...
Anyway, I think that I'll close this up for the night... more, as always, tomorrow...
This just in... Tyler has departed Hunstville, TX on his way home via Dallas... where he will stay the night, and possible another night too. Damn, I'll be glad to see him!
