Still pretty damned hot here today, but it's cooled off a bunch since the sun went down. I've come to the conclusion that the sun is to blame mostly for the heat. There's a vague correlation there, but the theory breaks down completely in the winter. I guess that I'll have to re-think that one completely, eh?
I got up pretty early today, especially compared to Karen... 11:30 it was when Lacee called her... I don't know when she would've gotten up if Lacee hadn't've called.
I spent most of the morning trying to make WIN98 see the CDRoms and blanked out completely. I guess that I'll have to physically remove them (not the whole things, just the connections), start the machine, shut it down and re-install them... that otta do it.
But, of course, every other damned idea that I've had on how to do it didn't work, so it's hard telling.
Karen made me the happiest man in the world today. She said those four words that every husband wants to hear...
"I want a computer!"
I've been waiting for years to hear that.
The reason? QVC. Yep... the shopping channel on TV. They have an on-line site. Well, whatever. The ends justify the means, I guess... I meant that to sound rather tenuous.
Luckily, I've still got one channel left on the network box. And... the opportunity to get me a better machine... I figger a 450 PIII with a 15GB HD and a 19-inch monitor will cost about 1/3 of what I paid for this Compaq 30 months ago.
What will make this possible is the extra shift that I worked last rotation and the fact that my evaluation is coming up, and I should get a "bonus" instead of a raise, since I'm at the top of the scale.
Karen stayed out pretty late last night, and was hot and mosquito-bitten when she came home. There was that old hot south wind all day yesterday and today, at least until this evening. Anyway, Steve and Kim and the kids came home early, after planning on camping all weekend.
They were over here talking about it Thursday night and it sounded pretty good... camping out, I mean. But by yesterday afternoon I'd
Karen kept Patrick and Lacee most of the afternoon while Kim and Steve went back out to the lake to pick up their stuff... then Karen and I spent some time getting her on the web and set up with mail. Her email is Karen@nilknarf.net , naturally.
After a while, she offered to take me out to eat, and we decided on Laramie's steaks again... she got what she usually does, the kabob, and I got what I usually do... the bourbon steak. Only, this time... I didn't eat it all, just half of it. I'm trying to get smarter as I age... and it'll be really good later.
So... it's now 22:30, and I'm dragging, and Karen is wide awake. So I guess that I'll stay up with her a while, as long as I can, anyway...
completely talked myself out of it, and I'm glad that I did. I'm getting to be too old to sleep in a tent, even on an air mattress, much less put up with all the other crap... bugs and mosquitos, wind, camp food with grit in it... I've been too old for that for a long time, I guess.
