I managed to stay up until about 05:00 this morning, then I slept for a coupla hours and got up. I noticed that Karen had left her new glasses in the bathroom, so I put them in my pocket and went to see the doctor.
It was a very brief visit; he examined my knee, which has been doing well lately. I didn't bring up my foot problem because of a guilty conscience; that doesn't really have anything to do with the workers-comp injury, even though I might say that it does. Besides, it hasn't been bothering me lately anyway.
I'll just do like most other people would do: hope it goes away.
Anyway, after seeing the doc, I delivered Karen's glasses to Blue Cross for her, went into the entrance and dialed her number, but she was on break. I just left her glasses with the security guy and left without seeing her.
When I got home, I made a coupla small changes to the Linus system and rebooted it. I'm getting really close to getting it solved... I thought.
It hung up on the sendmail bootup; this means that there's something the matter with the networking. Well, it got by that after the timeout, then hung up again on some other network part boot-ups. Well, I figgered that'd be easy to fix... I knew what I'd done, I just had to undo it.
Good idea, but no cigar. I had worse problems than I knew.
It wouldn't take my password.
Kiss of death.
It wouldn't take JD or Tyler's signons either. The password file had been corrupted, along with who knows what else...
And I was sooooo close!
O'well, that was about a week's worth of learning experience down the drain... unless I actually learned something, which I hope that I did.
No, I hadn't done the rescue disk thing.
So I tried a re-install upgrade, but that didn't do it, still left the password file untouched and nasty.
I tried a new install, but I left the previous LILO boot procedure in place. Didn't work. The LILO was fubar.
So I then tried a new install deleting the LILO partition, but I didn't re-format the rest of the partitions. That got the system up OK, but still left quite a few files in an un-usable state. So I did what any rational being would have done: I brought it down hard (with the power switch) and went to bed.
And, for some reason or another, I slept very well; woke up at 17:55 feeling good and full of energy.
Well, not really. But I'm up, and doing a full install on the Linux with a complete re-format.
So now I need to eat something and take a shower and go to work for a week. I feel pretty bad that I didn't get more done this week... but I pretty much had fun, and dammit, I just can't do everything!
The boy's mother (my ex-wife Marta) is up from Texas visiting them, she's staying in Lawrence. She's on her spring break. I won't be seeing much of them until she leaves Sunday, not that I would see much of them anyway, being's I'm gonna be working...
I need to go call my mother, I think that I'll do that now, and put this up later after I get ready for work.
More tomorrow...
I think, once I get this figgered out, that I'm really gonna like this Linux stuff. I am, after all, a DOS kinda guy. Command-line prompt and all of that. Comes from my humble beginnings on a C=64.
