Nilknarf Journal

Journal Entry

Sunday, 16 August, 1998 06:52

Sunday Morning Coffee... Chip Davis, Manneheim Steamroller... perfect for this morning.

Amazing myself, I slept a full eight hours.

Amazing myself even further, I took an inventory on the state of the Doug, and found that yes, I feel Pretty Damned Good.

Perhaps this is the day that I have been waiting for! The one where I'm well.

Or maybe not. We'll see how the day goes and then judge. I think that, after Karen gets up, we'll sit and read the paper, then I'll get back to work on the lawn and a few other projects outside.

I've also decided that I'm going to give up on the computer job at work; last week, working days, has opened my eyes. I think that I know enough about Web Page Design (although you wouldn't know it from looking here) to make a good living at that, and there are all sorts of other web and computer-related jobs available starting at what I'm making now (which is the max there) and proceeding on upwards.

This would probably mean moving... but Karen is getting really close to retirement, and I don't think that she would mind at all.

We'll see.

I had an application for admission into the Atheist Journals Web-ring last week that I had to turn down, and I got a very sarcastic letter in return:
Hi There!
I received your application to join the Atheist Journal web-ring, and I'm sorry to say that your site doesn't qualify; I could find no on-line journal there, although there was a lot of other really good stuff!
An online journal consists of regular writings (as much as daily) by individuals. As an example, see my site, http://nilknarf.net/j.shtml , or any of the others in the Atheist Journal ring.
Thanx for your interest, and
Thanx for being here!
And, as always, go without gods.
Oh, I thought you meant a journal on your site of the events such as oh, Nancy going to the White House, or USA pickting the Promise Keepers, or progress notes on the ACLU case against the BoyScouts. I can see that hearing about your dentist appointment is much more interesting.

And I just had another person write who wanted to be listed on my Keirsey Profiles list... and I could not find a journal on his site, either! I think that there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what an online journal is...

Some people who do know, though...The Audience is a new web-ring started for people who read journals but not necessarily those who write them. Interesting concept, definitely worth watching. All that you need in order to join is a list of your favorite journals somewhere on a web page.

And, speaking of those lists...
980816.jpg Any time I'm visiting a site, I kinda look for a list of journals that the author reads. And when I find it, I check it out. Most of the time, nilknarf! isn't on their list, and I am vaguely disappointed.

However, I'll be the first to admit that nilknarf! is not for everybody. I am, for one thing, a great deal older than the average person on the Web, and older than all but one(?) of the present online journallers. I have a quite different perspective on life than the average 25-year-old; in fact, I have a quite different perspective than most 52-year-olds... I am, after all, on the web, and most of them are not.

I must admit that I am very, very tickled when nilknarf! is on a list that I stumble across.

I'm also quite tickled when I get mail calling me a "Well-known respected journaller"; I've gotten a couple of those lately, too. The good with the bad.

So, then, my daily hit count has remained pretty stable ever since I started this 28 months ago... about 40 people come here on a daily basis. I recently added a Nedstatt counter, and it gives me an average of about 30 since I've had it up. I've also had a Webstat counter for about 18 months, and that's where I get the 40 average from.

The logs for my site indicate that there are about 75 people coming through on any given day, though. Most likely, the majority of the additional people are going to the Keirsey Profiles site.

There are journallers whose sites get 3, 4, 5 hundred hits daily. Am I jealous? Probably just a little. On the other hand, they are good writers doing and writing about interesting things. I am really surprised that 40 people think that my journal is interesting enough to return to on a daily basis. The webstat counter keeps track of return visits... 75% of my traffic here is return visits.

There is also a goodly number of well-written and interesting journals out there that get ten visitors daily. Most of them seem to be really happy to get getting that many.

Popularity... the number of hits you get... seem to be used to determine your net.status and whether or not you are a net.celebrity. I guess that I don't really want to be a net.celeb (sour grapes?) very much or I would spend some time on site promotion. Or maybe I just can't figger out how to do it. More importantly, though, is the why?

I'm still doing this for fun. It started out being fun, and it continues being fun. When it gets to be no fun then I will stop doing it. Or until I die, one or the other.

O'yeah! The first smoke-joke yesterday was from T. McDowell (of the Winston-Salem McDowells) who said that her brother uses this line...

Thanx for being here!
