Yesterday (Saturday) was a long long day. Turns out that I only slept for an hour or so and that was it. I spent a lot of time visiting with JD and Lisa. JD and I worked on the boat and got it ready to go, but I never could get ahold of Betsy, and we kinda gave up on the idea of going fishing, mostly due to the fact that I was really really tired.
So I went to bed about 21:00, after everyone had left: most everyone went to Lacees' Dance Recital, and JD and Lisa went off to visit their friend Mike in Lawrence.
And I slept twelve long wonderful hours.
20:21...
And today was a long day too. We spent a lot of time doing not much of anything, then we did some things. Pretty dull, altogether.
I worked some more on trying to get the 486 that I got for mom going, but utterly failed on the CDROM drive, so JD and I went out to Best Buy and got a new 24X IDE one, it was on sale plus it had a $30.00 rebate... and the SOB worked when I plugged it in!
I went ahead and loaded WIN95 on the 325meg drive that came with it, just to make sure that it would work OK. When I get to Enid,
JD with short Hair! I'll take the 540meg drive that she's got and put it in and bring the 325 home with me, along with the 386. She's got a 14.4 modem already, and I might have to swap out the video card, I'm not really sure about that.
Software... she's been using WP 5.1, and I think that she can make the transition to Word95 OK, she doesn't use many of the features anyway. I'm also taking her a color printer that they made me take when I bought the Conpaq... it's still in the box. I might bring home the DMP that she's using now, it's an old Star... a damn good printer in its time. That was a long time ago, though.
I'm also giving her my old edition of Quicken, And a side view... | She's been using the DOS version, and the windows version will convert her existing data.
I found out that WIN95 doesn't like CGA monitors... it just plain won't load with one hooked up. I had to switch the monitor with the Compaq to get it to load up. And after I thought about it for a while, how could it use CGA? It's a damned GUI!
I am gonna use the old chassis that mom is using now and get a 486 or a Pentium MD and put in it and then get a Unix system on it so I can start to learn that unix-geek stuff. Then I can use my CGI monitor with it too. I've got a little Unix handbook to get me started; it's about ten years old, but it should still be pertinent information. And I've seen the Red Hat unix flavor on eBay for about $15.00... I've been staying off of eBay lately, it's too much like a garage sale, and I've just about got all of the junk that I need.
JD and I cleaned up the back deck and the yard, and Karen fixed us a great meal and we sat out on the back deck and ate. It was a beautiful evening, after supper Karen and I took a walk, and sweated a lot. It's still really humid here, more so that I thought.
And it's going to be an early bedtime for me again, I'm not used to physical activity...
O'yeah! Thanx to all of you who tried to sign my guestbook and couldn't! It works just fine if you're me (or Elvis) but nobody else can. Helluva a concept for a guestbook, huh.
Thanx for being here!
