Sunday 05 APRIL 1998...
Shitty night. I didn't get to sleep until after 01:00, partly because of the coffee I'd had with dinner and partly because I tried really hard not to disturb Karen, who was not feeling well when she went to bed. It's really hard not to bother someone in a double bed when you're used to a king-sized one... I was scooched clear over to the edge of the bed, trying not to toss and turn.
We woke up about 07:00 and Karen had a headache. I got dressed and went out to the rim and smoked; when I first got out there, I was the only one there, but in the next ten minutes the place got very crowded.
I went back to the room and Karen was dressed and ready to go. We stopped by the gift shop and she got some sinus alka-seltzer for her headache, then went on to the restaurant and got breakfast and coffee. The stuff she got worked pretty well, by the time we got back to the room she was feeling fine again. We packed and loaded the car and were gone by 08:00.
This was a beautiful day... sun shining, and no wind for a change... I wish that the last two days wouldn't've been so windy, it would've been a lot nicer.
We stopped at the few outlooks on the east rim that we'd missed yesterday; again, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! We also stopped at the Anasazi Museum that Nancy, our tour guide, had recommended yesterday. It was worth the stop.
Karen has been wanting to see Lake Powell since she had seen it written up in some magazine or another, so that was our next stop. The scenery on the way was again beautiful, going through the painted desert... in a much different way than the Grand Canyon, of course. However, it seems that there are no direct roads to anywhere in Northern Arizona.
Lake Powell and the dam were impressive. We stopped at the visitors' center, then went around to the marinas and checked on the prices of renting a houseboat sometime in the future. They're pretty fucking pricy, but maybe worth it. Powell is a huge, beautiful and unique lake, with sheer rock cliffs and desert surrounding it and a variety of game fish. $750+ for three days on the cheapest houseboat, a 36-footer that sleeps six people.
After Powell, we headed for four corners and Cortez, Colorado. It was two-lane highway all the way through the beautiful desert. We got to Cortez just after dark... I kinda wanted to make it to Durango but I didn't want to miss the beautiful mountains in between Cortez and Durango in the dark...
