We're supposed to be having occasional snow flurries today, with no accumulation. So... it's been snowing for two hours now, with about 1/4 inch on the deck. Luckily, I like snow... and I've been pretty well cheated out of much this year, so I'll take what I can get.
Another busy night last night, again nothing very interesting, just lotsa sick people. Mostly kids, it seems like. I don't particularly like x-raying kids; they are generally unpleasant when they're sick, snotty noses and bawling. Also, I feel really sorry for them (and their parents) because there is so little that can be done to comfort them.
Yeah, we can and do give them drugs and cure them, but dammit! they hurt right now and they don't understand it and all their parents can do is hold them and cry along with them.
And they're squirmy and hard to hold still for long enough to get good films... but we do have an excellent device called a Pigg-o-stat that does a pretty good job. Unfortunately, it looks like a medieval torture device, scaring both the kids and the parents. But once we can get them in it, they can't move. And Howl! They get more mad than anything... but this is also good, for I can tell when their lungs are full so I can get the exposure on full inspiration.
This is probably more than you want to know about pediatric radiology, so I'll stop now.
And start on geriatric radiology.
I got to x-ray a lady a few days ago who was in her late eighties. She lived in a nursing home, and had fallen out of bed and fractured her hip. When I was filming her, she had been pretty well drugged, but she had some lucid moments. During one of these moments, she grabbed my sleeve and said with an evil look on her face, "You look like a young man who's not getting enough sex!". This about floored me. This lucidity did not last very long, though. I told Karen about it later, and she asked me if the gal was making a play for me. I didn't really think so, and even if she were, her diapers were full...
OK, that's enough for today, I guess. Time for a little nap. Karen is working again this morning, and we'll have tonight alone for hot tubbing and whatever... with the emphasis on the whatever....
Thanx for being here!
