I drove into work last evening in the deep twilight; I had to turn my headlights on. I was about ten minutes later leaving than usual, but this is a harbinger of the coming autumn. The unusually cool and dry weather reinforced this feeling... but it's only the second week of August!
Soon the leaves will turn and cover my yard. Will I, once again, wait until the last damned leaf falls off of the maple trees to start cleaning up the leaves? You betcher bootie... the odds are five to one that's what happens.
Autumn is by far my favorite season. The crisp air, the leaves, the hint of snow, the ducks and geese flying south... all beautiful, with a strong component of melancholy. One of the lonliest feelings in the world is sitting outside in the chilly dark and listening to the honking of a flock of geese migrating. It gets even better if you can hear a distant train whistle. And a quarter-moon and millions of stars make it just perfect... if you have your arms around your significant other...
It's been a very busy night, but nothing too bad has come in. By the time I stopped doing patients, I was two hours behind on the paperwork. Got that finished, time to start on the morning patients. No rest for the wicked, and none for me either...
My brother Dan reminded me yesterday of a fishing
It seems that my dad Max, who was Grandma Mildreds' son, caught a bass that weighed a couple more ounces than Mildreds' bass weighed. Dad decided to not tell Mildred, and nobody ever did. In a family like ours, that is an amazing feat... keeping a secret from Grandma Mildred!
So it really worked out pretty neat... he went to the grave knowing that he'd caught the biggest bass, and she went to hers several years later... knowing that she'd caught the biggest bass. And I will go to mine knowing that I outdid both of them!
More later...
story that is worth telling, not because of the fish involved, but the people. I kinda remember hearing a little bit of it, but not very well.
