12 JULY 1997

in the middle of the night.....

It started off being a very busy night. When I was in the shower, someone from the hospital called, wanting me to come in early. I got there as quickly as I could, and jumped into a mess. One of the techs was tied up in surgery, and the other one was running her butt off. Well, about 22:30, things calmed down a bit. Then we had a code red trauma come in... back to the races!

We wound up CT-ing and X-raying everything on this guy's body. I had called in the person on CT call, not being really sure of myself on some of the procedures for the cat scans that I would have to do. I wound up doing OK, anyway, but it is always nice to have some moral support at times like that.

Karen went to Lawrence to pick up Brian for Packy's birthday party tomorrow. Karen has to go in to work in the morning, so I'll babysit Brian for a couple of hours, at least until Kim gets out of bed, then he'll go over there, and I will go to sleep. I'm looking forward to that part... I didn't get to sleep on Friday 'till about 11:00, and I got up at 15:00 for some reason. I went back to bed about 18:30 and got another hour-and-a-half, but that wasn't enough.

So, I guess I'll have to miss Packy's party; there will be a smaller party at Kim's in the evening that I might go to... they'll have food, anyway. All of the "adults" will be celebrating Packy's birthday, the same way they celebrate everything else: with lots of beer and other substances.

I'm finally getting some respect around here. One of the security people, who has greeted me with "Hi, there, Doug-a-reeeno!" for years has started addressing me as "Mr. Doug-a-reeeno" and sometimes even as "Doctor Doug-a-reeeno"! Movin' on up in the world!

Well, the remainder of the night wasn't too bad. I did get a chance to do my back exercises once, and I feel pretty good. But I am still anxious to get into bed and gobble up some sleep. I'm going for about ten hours today, to get ready for the three twelve-hour nights, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Then a week off, with me in good health! I need it, there are a lot of things that I need to get done, and there are still a few fish I need to catch, too. Doug and I and his son Chris are going to go out on Thursday to Concordia, where there's a nice little lake. Concordia is about an hour north of here. We went up there either last year or the year before and caught some real nice sixteen-inch fish, and they should be up to eighteen or nineteen this year. I just hope that I can catch a few, my last outings have not been very impressive.

'Til tomorrow....

Thanx for being here!
