...In the middle of the night...

First off, I want to thank Ubiety for coming forth as the originator of the fearsome phrase the JOY patrol(The Journal Oversight and advisorY). I do believe that he made this up, but it never hurts to be too careful. Paranoia is nature's way of telling you to watch your ass, after all. And it's not nice to mess with mother nature, I've been told.

A nice father's day. I slept for eight hours. I got a card from Lacee and a hug from Tyler, and JD called me at work (he forgot that I go in at 19:00 on Sunday-Monday-Tuesday). I got ready to eat my cereal, put it in a bowl and found that we had no milk. Thought about toast and discovered that we had four pieces of bread, only enough for my sandwiches tonight. I got a candy bar when I got to work, though, so I'm OK 'til it's time to eat.

Beautiful thunderstorm tonight, the kind that makes you want to live forever. Lotsa lightning, wind blowing, occasionally pouring rain...

I was watching from the ambulance bay, a safe covered area, and I was reminded of a different time. Last Friday morning, about 03:00 or so, I went out to stand and smoke a cigarette by the ambulance bay. I was outside, just watching the sky. There were small clouds skudding by, occasionally blotting out the quarter-moon. I was struck by the most melancholy feeling that I have had in a long time. Just from out of the blue, I had tears running down my face and that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach that something terrible was about to happen. A hopeless, helpless feeling of doom and gloom.

Luckily, the feeling was not one that endured, but one that was very transcient. This used to be an occasional happening for me, and sometimes, the bad times, frequent. It's probably been two or three years. Don't let anyone tell you that Prozac isn't wonderful...

The lady on the weather channel said to watch out for dangerous lightning. As opposed to, say, the safe lightning? I was taught (or maybe I figgered it out on my own)that the really dangerous lightning was that which you didn't see; your hair just stood on end and * poof! * you were fried.

It is really really hard sometimes to resist asking a patient when the last time was that they bathed. You don't really want to know any more about what brought this up...

Interesting Phenomena Department

It has been raining, off and on, for more than four hours. During a period of lighter rain, I was standing in the ambulance bay chatting with some ambulance people. I noticed a small cluster of moths around one of the big-ass lights used to light the entrance area and parking lot. I became interested and, upon closer observation, I noticed that the moths were being pelted and knocked down by the raindrops. This light was about 20 feet tall, and I observed one moth almost make it to the light, get knocked down five feet, go up a foot, get knocked down again, and again, and again. But he (or she, who knows from moths) kept getting up and heading for the light. This action was being repeated by his/her counterparts on a regular basis. There were always four or five moths really near the light and maybe fifty in the process of running the gauntlet.

There is a moral here. There is something significant said about the state of the human condition here. The winning lottery number for Wednesday night is here. These things are all very well hidden from my poor mind, else I would profit from them, and I would share my secrets with you.

However, it is, as my buddy Steve pointed out, really cheap entertainment...

Home again, home again, higgity hig...
I got home right as Karen was leaving so we had a scene right in the driveway. Our neighbors must really think that we're weird... they might be right, but what the hell. I hadn't kissed my wife in more than thirteen hours, after all!

My back is giving me a bunch of problems, I hope that it gets better with some sleep. I felt a twinge in my right leg while lifting a patient in intensive care to take my cassette out, and I never really gave it a thought. About an hour later, my back and right sacroiliac joint were starting to throb. It was my left leg that was bothering me a month ago....

Anyway, to bed! More tomorrow!

Thanx for being here!
