And now for another edition of...

...In the Middle of the Night...

I have been asked many times what is the difference between In The Middle Of The Night and While You Were Sleeping.... and I have to admit that I don't know. Probably the best explanation would be they're different words that mean about the same thing. Although In The Middle Of The Night will always mean the same thing, while While You Were Sleeping.... means different things to different people (like me and Gus) and can mean different things to different people at the same time... that is, it will not always be true. Although, in a sense, In The Middle Of The Night will mean something different in the actual time that it is happening to people from other locations, such as Australia and California. So that is not always true, either. That would not be a good way to differentiate the two phrases.

Both of the phrases mean something to me as I'm typing them, though. That meaning should be inferred if I do it right. OK. It's dark outside, the sun is shining on the other side of the earth and it's 03:28(CDT). That's what it is right now, although by the time that you read this it will be later. Maybe much later. Actually, you might save this for years and then read it... and by that time it won't make any difference. Actually, it doesn't really make any difference in any case at any time.

Someone else has written about this recently. If I recall rightly (and there are no guarantees ) they were also slightly confused.

Time. It's difficult to understand... where it goes, where it's been. It it happening continuously, like we thought light used to happen? Or does it come in little packets, or in waves? Are our lives lived in super-fast jerky little movements like a laser show? Or do we flow?

It's very useful, though... it keeps everything from happening at once. Or maybe it doesn't, our perceptions are just really slow, and everything has already happened and we're just now reacting to it.

I have had quite a few comments on yesterdays entry regarding the new journal group, and many nasty things were said. As I said, their rejection of my journal doesn't bother me at all. I'm not going to call them any names or boycott them just because their tastes and values are different than mine and/or my readers. I really have no interest in how people pair off or group up or whatever. I do believe that the Open Pages ring has been very beneficial to the internet world as a whole and the individual journalers involved in it. I don't think that any of the people in the other group have dropped out of it, and I hope that they don't.

Comments on my new site design:

Anyway, I worked really hard last night to get the tables looking right in Netscape, so hard that I messed them up completely for MSIE. Still aren't right in Netscape, either, dammit. And I really hate to say this, but 60-70% of the visitors to this site are using Netscape; 88% are using some form of windows (mostly WIN95) and there are some AOL browsers coming by too (Thanx, Bill?) And about 6 other browsers that I didn't recognize, and even some that the counter didn't.

Anyway, the point is, is, ... I'm workin' on it! As fast as I can. Tables are hard for this old brain, but for what I want to do, the way I want to look, it's gotta be either tables or (shudder) Frames. Doing it in frames would be a snap, actually, but there are a lot of people who don't like frames (no, I'm not counting... put your hands down!) so I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

Oh, by the way, if anyone tells you that the numbers of hits are so unimportant that they don't have a counter... you should know that there are lots of sneakier ways of getting the info, from log sheets from their ISP on down. They might be as sincere as hell, and they may never look at them, but they are there.

Back to the archipelago group... one of the things that makes the internet wonderful is that anyone can pretty much do what they want to. Anybody can start a new ring, and invite like-minded people into it. And anyone can join up with them if they meet the qualifications set up for that ring. The people in the archipelago ring have a lot in common... relatively young, up-and-coming, female, in or around show business/writing/literature/art... I'm a lot different than them. I could start a ring exclusively made up of ageing bald-headed men journalers if I wanted to. Over 50, with at least 70% of the cranium hairless. And none of this shaving stuff just to fit in either. And if you have more than one non-pedestrian entry a week you'll be put on probation. Anything approaching brilliance and You're Out! Them's the rules...

Well, I'm still working on content. Actually, I just got home... had a meeting this morning at 07:00... one of the mandatory things, talking about changes... one of the things talked about was that after termination, employees will earn 18 years of severance pay! Yes, that perked me up considerably. Well, shit, she meant to say 18 weeks... bummer. I was ready to go for that!

There are changes happening at the hospital, and these meetings are designed to quell rumors. Lotsa rumors going around, some of them pretty funny. Sometimes, when listening to rumors, I really want to start making up some of my own and start them on their rounds. I think that someone with the same ideas but less restraint than I have has been doing that.

It's been a long night, I'm going to put this up and work on the design some more for you netscrapers and then go to bed....

Well, I got it put together better, but still not perfect. The Main Menu page works equally well for both MSIE and Netscape, but the main Index page doesn't. Netscape users will have to page down to get to the good stuff... for right now, anyway. I am going to work on it 'til I get it right, but it's time for me to go to sleep!

Thanx for being here!
