Interesting last 24 hours.
I lost my computer. Well, I didn't really lose it, but it quit working. Big time. Doesn't do windows. Will do DOS. Some files still on the hard disk, some not. Email files gone. Poof. Shit. Many program files gone. Much data gone. Got a backup of my quicken, though.
And my backup of nilknarf files... is on the server. So I can get those back.
So, how am I going to get those back without a computer, you say? Well, I'll tell you.
I went out to Circuit City and got a Compaq Presario 4716 with a 17 inch monitor. Yeah. In debt for the rest of my life, again. But it is beautiful! And fast... it's a 200 mz Pentium with 32 mg edo and a 3.1 HD and a 33.6 modem. And a 12X CD Rom.
It screams. While I whimper, looking at the receipt.
It was the best that I could do on a Saturday afternoon in Topeka. I could've saved $100-200 by doing the mail-order thing, but I just couldn't wait.
I'm currently downloading MSIE 3.1 with mail and news. The full install is taking about one hour. Then I can find out maybe where my mail files are on the old machine. And hopefully, find them and transfer them over. Now I know why I should always answer email immediately. There were four or five that I've been thinking on... and if they're gone, I'm going to have to think much harder. So if you've sent me anything recently, please re-send it!
And if you're on my mailing list, please re-do that too. Cause it's gone, along with my address book. I'm in a world of hurt, here!
O'yeah. All of my bookmarks are gone, too.
When MSIE 3.1 gets done, I need to find CUTE somewhere and get it. Then I'll almost be set. At least, I can FTP this, so you-all will know what's going on. So I need to get this up tonight, and I think that I will.
There's still a lot of setting up to do, too. I got MS Office installed already, though. Just need to do Quicken and Paint Shop Pro and I should be pretty well set.
