Arrived in Huntsville about 17:00 today after a three-and-a-half hour drive from Dallas this afternoon. But let's start with yesterday, anyway, which is where I left off...
We left Topeka at about 07:30 Thursday. Drove for a long time. Just north of Ardmore, Oklahoma we saw the hot dog truck. Or whatever it is, that hot-dog-and-bun shaped vehicle. That was the highlight of the trip to that point. We also stopped in the Arbuckle mountains at a "scenic turnout" and it was pretty much. Especially for Oklahoma.
We got to the Texas border and stopped at the tourist information center on I-35. Really nice people there... however, they had never heard of the motel where we had reservations, the Clubhouse Inn. I was wanting directions for it, since I hadn't a clue as far as how to get there.
Karen finally remembered where she had written the number, so the girl called the place and got directions for us. We went on to the motel, only got a little bit lost. In 17:00 Dallas traffic. We missed the Wendy's that the place was hiding behind...
The motel was really new, which is why the tourist place hadn't heard of them and they weren't in the phone book. As we were checking in, the assistant manager mentioned that he was from the Overland Park, Ks. Clubhouse Inn, and later there was some other lady came over and introduced herself... she was also from Lenexa, traveled around to all of their motels for some reason or another, really nice gal. The hotel didn't have their liquor licence yet, but they were having a chamber of commerce meeting, and the asst. mgr. told us to go on in and have a glass of wine. So we did, and all of these people (in suits) kinda looked at us funny. So we were sitting in the lobby when the other lady introduced herself.
Nothing else interesting happened. We walked around, found a BBQ place, ate, went back to the motel. I crashed about 20:00 and we got up relatively early, and availed ourselves of the free breakfast.
OK, back to today. We went to downtown Dallas, thinking that there would be all kinds of signs to the Kennedy museum. There aren't. Any. Signs. I finally stopped at a gas station and asked directions. So then we got ripped off on the parking. If we would've gone another two blocks we could've parked for $2.50... we paid $6.00 in a private lot. No big deal... then we walked a few blocks and found the museum. It was a very well done thing, and I liked it a lot better that I was planning on. Karen loved it, of course. Most of the people there were our age... I think Kennedy meant a lot to our generation.
I got directions to I-45 from the guy in the parking lot, and it was easy getting out of downtown. We were soon on our way to Huntsville.
JD and Lisa greeted us well with hugs all around. Lisa is a charming young woman, I think that she and Karen will get along really well together. Tyler came over a couple hours after we got here, and is sitting on the bed playing the guitar as I'm writing. JD has the computer in his bedroom, since he moved all of his music equipment into the second bedroom. He and Lisa are giving up their bed for us, very nice of them, I thought. I really appreciate it, too!
JD's having some problems with the server here at SHSU, and I don't know if I can get this uploaded or not tonight. And I'm not sure if I can get the FTP thing he has working, either. He's back to using Win 3.11, so I'm trying to get around in that again, have to unlearn some things. Also, I didn't bring the notify list along with me, so I can't let my people know that I've done it if I do do it...
So I'll try again... this might just be in a queue that I put up when I get back....
But, dammit, Win3.11 won't let me use *.html for an extension... only can use three letters. So I can't edit my index.html and have it work right... the URL would have to be .../dfranklin/index.htm for it to be an automatic... which would put me "off the air" as it were. Unless someone went into the September files and looked... but y'all are trained to go to the front page, where I list the latest entries... damn, damn, damn. So this'll have to wait 'til I get back, I guess, unless I can get WIN95 put back on here.
Plus the server is having major problems still...
