One more night gone, and an interesting one it was, too. The funny parts first...
I xrayed a girl's foot about 04:00. I asked her what happened, and she said that someone stepped on her foot. I then asked when it happened. She said "between one and three." So I said, "someone stepped on your foot for two hours? No wonder it hurts! Why didn't you just tell them to move?" Sometimes I crack me up. The patient was tickled, too. But it hurt when she laughed... well, you'd 'a had to been there...
We had the main film processor break down; it wasn't really broke down, but the blower fan that drys the films quit working, so the xray films come out damp. So I had to make sure that I caught each film as it came out (so they wouldn't stick together) and "air dry" them by waving them around. Anyway, the ED Doc, Dr. Martin, remarked that the films were damp. I told him that we were reviving the old tradition of "wet readings" and he cracked up. For those of you who don't know, back in the old days, before we had machines to develop the xray films, we used to dip the film in developer and fixer for prescribed times, then in water, then run them through a dryer or let them drip dry in room air. If the doctor wanting the films was in a hurry, he would ask the radiologist to do a "wet reading", that is, to read the films before they were dry. This was like 30 years ago. Now you know more than you ever wanted to know about this subject.
Again, you had to be there, but you weren't, and I was. Trust me, it's funny.
What's not funny: assholes who don't wear seat belts and get ejected from their cars partway except for their legs. Then they come in and hope we can fix them. Sometimes we can, sometimes we can't. Bummer, either way. Better for them to be smarter. But they ain't, or I probably wouldn't have a job.
Three shootings in Topeka last night. Two fatalities. Last night was beautiful, the humidity dropped twenty points and it was nice and cool. Getting towards autumn, I love it. Looking forward to hot tub weather again...
Three twelves and I'm done.
Later...
