A good day. We fished until about 15:00, had a lot of fun as usual. We went to Hillsdale, a lake about 20 miles east of Ottawa. Tyler and I only had about an hour's sleep and he fell asleep a couple of times in the boat, once with his fishing rod in his hand and his lure in the water. After we got loaded up to come home, he crashed in the back seat. Doug mentioned that he wouldn't be able to walk for a week after sleeping in the back seat of that truck for an hour. Ah, the resilience of youth! We drove home and Tyler is again crashed, this time on the bed. I did get him to take his shoes off first, though. I took a shower and will be crashing myself really soon now!
We got up at 03:15 and ate a bowl of cereal and we were loaded and at Doug's at 04:00, the appointed hour. For the first time ever, I had to wake him up... his alarm didn't go off. We were on the road by 04:45, though. We stopped at Hardee's in Lawrence and got some coffee and some more breakfast. Doug was eating, so Ty and I ate again too.
It took the fish a while to decide to start biting. After a couple of hours, Tyler finally caught the first one, then I caught one. Then another long period, then Doug caught three in a row, including the biggest of the day, 21 inches, about 6 pounds. The sky had become overcast and had prompted the fish to feed, or something. The overcast skies continued off and on, mostly on, for the rest of the day. The brief periods of sunshine were terribly hot, we were happy to see the clouds. I caught one about five pounds, then Tyler caught a 5 1/2 pounder. We fished about another 1 1/2 hours, then called it quits. A good fishing day for a Kansas lake, nine bass total.
As we were pulling in, Karen and Lacee were leaving. Karen had picked up Brian in Lawrence and he and Patrick were riding their bikes at the crestview trails BMX track, and Karen and Lacee were going down to pick them up. After I started writing this, they all came back; the boy's faces were red as beets, Karen had let them ride home following her. They were all happy to see me... and I'm going to bed, probably won't wake again today.
